How to Get to Friday Harbor
From the mainland, most travelers start their journey in Anacortes. The Washington State Ferry to Friday Harbor takes about 1 hour and 5 minutes. Book your tickets in advance online here, especially in summer. Round-trip fares for walk-on passengers are $16.50 for adults, and vehicle costs vary depending on size.
If you’re coming from Seattle, you can also book a direct floatplane via Kenmore Air or take a shuttle/ferry combo. But the Anacortes route is the most affordable and scenic.
Getting Around Friday Harbor
Downtown Friday Harbor is completely walkable, so no car is needed if you plan to stay in town. The Friday Harbor Hop-On-Hop-Off Trolley is a great option if you want to explore beyond downtown. Tickets are $30, and the route includes major stops like the Whale Museum, Lime Kiln Lighthouse, English Camp, Pelindaba Lavender Farm, and the Sculpture Garden.
If you’re more active, you can also rent a bike or moped from Susie’s Mopeds, located right near the ferry terminal.

What to Do in Friday Harbor
The Whale Museum is one of the top draws in Friday Harbor. This small but impressive museum is dedicated to the local marine life, especially the resident orca pods. Exhibits are interactive and educational, making them great for families or solo travelers curious about marine ecology. It’s a great first stop to understand the Salish Sea ecosystem before heading out on a whale-watching tour.

San Juan Islands Sculpture Park is a short drive or trolley ride from town. This 20-acre outdoor sculpture park is dotted with over 150 works of art set among meadows, woods, and water. It’s peaceful, photogenic, and a unique blend of nature and creativity. Entry is by suggested donation, and you’ll often find new pieces each season.
If you’re willing to venture beyond town, Westcott Bay Shellfish Co. is a must for fresh oysters and waterfront vibes. You can shuck your own right at the table, and the picnic-style dining setup is casual and beautiful. It’s about a 20-minute drive or trolley ride away.
Friday Harbor has serious small-town bookshop energy. Griffin Bay Bookstore has a thoughtfully curated selection of titles plus journals, cards, and local authors. Just around the corner, Serendipity Used Books is a used bookstore tucked into a charming house with cozy rooms full of hidden treasures. If you’re a book lover, both are worth a browse.

This vibrant purple farm, Pelindaba Lavender Farm, is beautiful to wander in summer and offers everything from essential oils to lavender chocolate and ice cream. You’ll also find a storefront right in town if you don’t have time to get out to the fields.
From the ferry dock, stroll the harbor’s edge and watch seaplanes land, boats bob in the marina, and locals grab coffee on their lunch break. It’s low-key and scenic, and a perfect way to start or end your visit.
